Jane Oufe Sr

Jane Aline Payne Sroufe died on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 after a long illness. She was born on July 9, 1923, in Tahoka, Texas to Arthur Lee Payne and Evvie Stewart. Her mother died when she was 8 months old. Her father became ill and unable to care for her. Charlie and Eula Mae Woods took over. Eula Mae became Janes mother in her mind and heart.
After high school she attended college at SMU and the University of Texas. She worked as a private secretary to the Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Commerce. She married the love of her life Delmar Sroufe on April 7, 1954. They met on a blind date. He was a World War II C47 pilot and the president of the Houston Patent Bar Association.
She was a woman of strong faith. She was an active member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas and a member of Daughters of the King. She participated in a weekly prayer group. The past several years she lived at the Terrace in Houston where she enjoyed many good friendships. She was devoted to her family caring for her husband and daughter during lengthy illnesses. Her grandsons were her great joy and she was extremely proud of them. She loved Galveston and spent many summers there with friends and family. During her life she was an artist and art dealer, a real estate broker, a bridge player and she loved to entertain. She had a great sense of humor and a true love for life. She was beautiful from her early years to the last, a beautiful person inside and out.
Mrs.Sroufe is survived by her son Stewart Sroufe and wife Sara of Hobbs, NM grandsons Tyler and Tanner Sroufe, Michael and Matthew Mahoney and her first greatgrandson who was born on June 14, Collin Michael Mahoney sisters, Artie McMinn, Mary Nixon and Beverly Warren brother, Jimmy Payne sisterinlaw, Maye Payne and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years Delmar Lee Sroufe and beloved daughter, Elizabeth Sroufe Mahoney brothers, Thomas W. Payne and A.L. B. Payne and sisters, Velma Sedgewick, Pauline Ussery and Bonnie Buell.
Mrs. Sroufe will be interred in the DallasFort Worth National Cemetery on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. The family requests in lieu of flowers that you Forgive someone today. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
