Joe Walker, 86, of Hobbs, passed away peacefully, Monday, September 25, 2017. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Thursday, September 28, 2017, at First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Greg Kennedy officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Wednesday the 27th from 9:00am - 7:00 pm at Griffin Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 at the funeral home.

Joe was born on December 5, 1930, in Wellington, Texas, to John and Inez Walker. He married Joyce Gwyn on May 25, 1952, in Muleshoe, Texas, and they celebrated over 65 wonderful years together. Joe was a graduate of West Texas State University and Eastern New Mexico University. He taught school in the Hobbs Municipal Schools prior to teaching at New Mexico Junior College. At the college, he taught English and was Divisional Dean of the Arts and Humanities Department. After retirement he and Joyce traveled the world.

Joe was a member of First United Methodist Church, serving on the Foundation Committee and teaching Sunday School for many years. He was actively involved in a number of organizations including Lea County Center for the Arts, Southwest Symphony, City of Hobbs Cemetery Board Member, Charter member of the Southeastern New Mexico Genealogical Society. Joe and Joyce established the Joe and Joyce Walker Awards for Excellence in the Arts.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Joyce of the home; son John Walker and wife Luanne of Albany, TX; daughter Cindy Walker of Hobbs; sisters Beth Turner and husband Bill of Fritch, TX, and Shirley Murray of Springdale, AR; grandchildren Jessi Bryan and husband Cullen of Albany, TX, and Cody Walker of Abilene, TX; great grandchildren Jake, Baley, Carley, Presley and Zane Green and Bentley and Dax Bryan all of Albany, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to FUMC for Sacramento Family Life Center, 200 E. Snyder, Hobbs, NM 88240.
