Maximino Velasquez, age 87, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was the heart of a large and close-knit family, a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, coach, and friend whose love and guidance touched generations. Maximino was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and carried his faith with him throughout his life.
Maximino had a lifelong passion for baseball and softball. He found great joy in watching, coaching, and supporting his children and family in sports, always cheering from the sidelines and sharing his love of the game. He also loved hunting, and when he was no longer able to hunt himself, he still found great joy in going with his sons and spending that time together outdoors.
His devotion to family extended beyond his own children - after the passing of his brother, he lovingly took in and raised his brother's children as his own, a reflection of his generous heart and unwavering commitment to family. He was truly the center of his family, a steady presence whose wisdom, strength, and love brought everyone together.
Maximino is survived by his loving children: Norma Pickerel of Midland, Texas; Johnny Velasquez of Jay, Oklahoma; Joann Pender of Eunice, New Mexico; Richard Velasquez of Eunice, New Mexico; and Dario Velasquez Jr. of Carlsbad, New Mexico; his sisters, Rosenda Hargrove, Juliana Sanchez, Vicenta Aranda, and Juanita Rueda; and his brother, Blas Velasquez, all of Lovington, New Mexico; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of love and family devotion.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Petrolina Velasquez; his brothers, Dario Velasquez and Eliseo Velasquez; his daughter, Cynthia Short; and his niece, Sylvanna Barraza.
Maximino's legacy of love, sacrifice, and dedication to family will live on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
