W. Wayt

W. Bert Wayt, 93, of Hobbs, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in Lubbock, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Harold Armstrong, officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Fort Bliss Honor Guard.

Mr. Wayt was born on November 26, 1919 in Sac City, Iowa to Earl and Otis Lee Wayt. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a corpsman in North Africa and Italy. Mr. Wayt married Marian Van Horn on August 16, 1944 in Butler, PA and they celebrated over 68 years of wonderful marriage. They moved to Hobbs in 1952 where he taught History and was a counselor at Houston Jr. High School until his retirement in 1984. He was elected to the City Commission and served as mayor in 1969. Mr. Wayt was commissioned as a Lay Minister and served for 30 years in First Presbyterian Church in Jal. He was very service oriented and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and taught the 55 Alive program through AARP. Mr. Wayt was a member of the Community Players, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, VFW, American Legion and was an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Hobbs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings.

Survivors include his wife, Skip Wayt daughter, Jalene Collins and husband, Jerry sons, Brad Wayt and wife, Mary and Mark Wayt and wife, Donna 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
