Donald Hammer

Donald Ray Hammer, better known as Don, or Pop, was born June 8, 1947 in Hillsboro, Texas to Felix and Ethel Hammer. On December 17, 2022, he lost the long fight with cancer at the age of 75. A memorial mass in his honor will be held 10am on January 3, 2023, at St. Helena Catholic Church.

Don was an active man, working throughout his life in demanding jobs. As a young man he joined the US Army where he served his country in both Vietnam and Korean, receiving a Army Commendation Medal. Once back home, Don joined up with the Texas State Troopers and married Beth Backor, with whom he shared a wonderful 51 years and raised their four children. After several years with the Troopers, Don and his family moved to Hobbs where he worked in the oilfield as a Mud Engineer.  Don, along with his son, loved dirt track racing, and they built and raced cars together for many years. At his heart, Don was a loving family man, who loved playing silly jokes and pranks to make people laugh, spending time with his children and grandchildren who were the light of his life, and attending services and events at St. Helena Catholic Church. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him

Preceding him in passing are his parents.

Left to treasure his memory are his four children, Donna (David) Hicks of Hobbs, NM, Mike (Christy) Hammer of Edmund, OK, Barbie Hammer of Kansas City, MO, and Jenni (Ty) McCracken of Melissa, TX, grandchildren Kaitlin (Lane) Moore of Phoenix, AZ, Emma (Matthew) Ross of Lubbock, TX, Austin Eckert of Kansas City, MO, Molly McCracken and Chase McCracken of Melissa, TX, Brittany Hammer of Hobbs, NM, Jacob Hammer and Kaleb Hammer of Edmund OK, two great-grandchildren Wrenley and Rhett Hammer of Edmund OK, and siblings Bobby Hammer, Thomas Hammer and Marilyn Mock.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Nor-Lea Cancer Center in Lovington who spent almost 8 years caring for Don. In leu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society nearest you or St. Helena Catholic Church.
