Terry Clardy

Terry Clardy was born on October 27, 1949, in Graham, Texas to Juanita and TJ Clardy. Although, he lived most of his life in Hobbs, New Mexico, he was a Texan at heart. He loved hunting, fishing, and exploring the banks of the Brazos River with his brother, Mike.

Terry served with the 9th Division of the U.S. army from 1966-1969 in Germany and during Tet Offensive in Vietnam. He was a sergeant, a squad leader, and received numerous medals including the purple heart. Terry was severely wounded in Vietnam resulting in a year’s stay in different army hospitals. Once discharged from the hospital, it was a couple of years before he was able to walk unaided by leg braces and a cane. Terry’s focus was never on his own sacrifice, but always on those with whom he served.

Terry met his wife, Patty Moon, at Thanksgiving dinner at her house when they were 16 and 17 years old. He had come with her cousin, Conrad Lee. Terry and Patty married on December 29, 1972 and began raising their family.

Over the years, Terry earned a BS, MBA, and a Doctoral degree in Theology. Terry loved to study the Bible. To better understand the Bible, he taught himself Greek. He would spend countless hours studying in preparation to teach Sunday School. He especially enjoyed the years he taught Sunday School at New Hope Baptist and First Baptist in Hobbs.

Despite his education, Terry preferred working in the oil field. He enjoyed the people he worked with and the challenges the oilfield presented. He began working in the oilfield at age 17 and remained there until he retired at age 70. His scope of work included reverse unit and fishing tool operator, management, and sales. Some of his favorite companies were Star Tool, Weatherford, JSI, and D & L Meters.

Terry worked hard and took pleasure in providing for his family. He counted it a privilege to help raise three grandchildren in his home. Despite his health issues, he worked long, hard hours without complaint. He was a man of integrity, hard work, honesty, dedication, sacrifice, and generosity. His hands were calloused, his voice was deep, his stature intimidating, his sense of humor questionable, but his love was enduring. He loved his family and God above all else.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, TJ Clardy and Juanita Smith; his in-laws, Norma and Lonnie Moon; two sisters, Cathy Caswell and Mary Ellen Patterson; and a brother, Mike Clardy. He is survived by his wife, Patty; daughters, Rebecca Richmond (Brad Richmond) of Hutchinson, Kansas; Theresa Lopez of Artesia, New Mexico; Kim Spears of Dallas, Texas, Terrilynn Spillar of Pensacola, Florida; Phillipa Cocker of McMinnville, Oregon; one brother, Billy Jack Clardy (Doris) of Rose Hill, Mississippi; 27 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
